Understanding Exams at Foot Fusion School of Dance
At Foot Fusion, we are proud to be associated with the International Dance Teachers’ Association (IDTA). Every year, we hold exams in ballet, tap, modern jazz, and some street dance, depending on the child’s age and readiness.
How Exams Work
• Syllabus Work: Children work towards their exams during lessons, focusing on a variety of exercises and routines.
• Categories: We offer a range of exams:
• Rosettes (ages 3+)
• Preparatory and Primary levels
• Grades 1–5 and Intermediate
• Groups: Most exams are taken in small groups of three (six for Rosettes), allowing children to feel comfortable and supported.
Medals and Confidence-Building Opportunities
In addition to formal exams, we offer medal tests, which can consist of one or two dances performed as a solo, duet, or trio. These are a wonderful way to build confidence and celebrate progress.
Class Assessment Exams
For children not yet ready or unable to complete full exams in ballet, tap, or modern jazz, we offer class assessment exams. These ensure every child has the chance to feel proud of their work without pressure.

Our Approach
• Readiness: If I believe your child isn’t ready for an exam, I won’t enter them. This decision is made to protect their confidence and ensure they feel positive about their dancing journey.
• Participation: While we encourage all children to take part, exams are not mandatory. If your child doesn’t wish to participate, that’s absolutely fine. They will still learn all the syllabus work and remain in their current group.
A Note to Parents
I’ve been teaching for over 20 years, and my priority is always the well-being and confidence of your child. I will never allow a child to take an exam if I feel it would harm their self-esteem, nor will I be pressured into doing so.
If you have any questions about exams or your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
